As some of you remember, I spend a lot of time at Pole walking outside by myself.

Going to the balloon shack every day, hiking to the snowstakes, measuring the drift stakes in front of the station. It would be so ungodly boring without my mp3 player. Especially after the sun sets. Then you're just trudging forward into darkness, bundled up in your layers like that kid from A Christmas Story, looking at the tiny red light on your destination or occasionally checking the GPS unit. Walking and waiting and walking to get where you're going.

Music is not the best thing for this activity. I like listening to stories because it occupies my mind much better. Last winter I didn't know how much time I would spend hiking outside, so I didn't bring enough audio material with me. The station had automatic higher-priority downloads of some NPR podcasts: Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. I personally downloaded This American Life every week, although frequently it would take two days to download a show (~28 MB) because our bandwidth was so slow and the satellite windows so limited. I ran short of interesting material pretty often. I did listen to the two news podcasts from that station list, but I realized after a few months that I really, really wanted other stuff. I don't think it is particularly healthy to hear the entire American news update every single day. The cumulative effect just depresses the hell out of you.

This year I'm saving a big archive in advance. I'm doing it especially big because I plan to cross-country ski on the skiway after the planes leave, and it's easier to exercise when you are being entertained. *g*

Here are some of my downloads:
Radiolab
Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's SModcast
BBC Documentaries
Country Life (Radio New Zealand)
Selected Shorts
The Amateur Traveler Podcast

If you guys have favorite podcasts, would you mind telling me about them? I want to build up a really big archive before I leave so I can eliminate the danger of wandering around bored in the darkness. Auroras do not always come out to entertain when you need them.

I got an 85 on my lab practical! There were some tough questions so I'm thrilled with that score.

Driving home, I remembered that I made silly pictures for my journal (back then, it was still OpenDiary) to celebrate finals during my first semester at UNO. This particular picture still applies.

Word count: 507. AND THAT'S IT. I mean, I'll keep writing, and I'll certainly keep hoping this turns into a story, but no more posting word counts. Still, I did it! I wrote a minimum of 100 words/day for an entire month. Mini-nanowrimo was a good idea; it really helped me push on this idea I've had forever. Of course, as I said, I still don't know if it will become an actual story, and even if it does, only three people will read it because it's all about Teyla with minimal John/Rodney. But it was a good month. Also: whew!

Some of the associations that I create to help with memorization are ridiculous. During our last animal development exam, I had to remember the different modes of induction for the metanephric blastema and the metanephric bud. Since the blastema will develop with a signal from any epithelia, I made the connection that whores are blasé and will sleep with anyone, blasé = blastema, therefore the blastema will develop tubules with anyone.

Wednesday we have a lab practical. When I think of the blastema during this exam, I will picture Dave Chappelle singing "I Want To Piss On You" in the R. Kelly parody segment because you could pay a whore to do that and the blastema develops into the urine-producing nephrons.

If other students are using weirder correlations, I don't think I want to know.

First a list of fabulous things:

* whooo, incredibly annoying yet critical pile of code working and committed, soon to deploy to the AO3. This Yuletide move might actually work, you guys. *g*

* [info]queenbitchfest master list of stories \o/ SO SO MANY of which were amazing but especially [info]winterlive's Future Legend -- 52K words of gloriously good post-apocalyptic Kradam inspired BRILLIANTLY by Diamond Dogs, omg, so amazing.

* [info]teamlambliff and [info]atom_fic, because YAY for Adam/Tommy, who clearly are out to provide ALL THE FANSERVICE IN THE WORLD. No, seriously, they publicly tweeted Velvet Goldmine-inspired pet names at each other. (Tommy == "glitterbaby" lol)

My own [info]queenbitchfest story was apparently kind of obvious going by the guessing, haha, but here it is on my website:

Stardust (2500 words)
Adam/Kris, adult, explicit
Adam pushed himself up and loomed up over Kris, his eyes heavy-lidded in glitter and shadow, predatory and smiling. Inspired by "Ziggy Stardust".

Also, cough, I might have committed some Adam/Tommy porn last night in the [info]aianonlovefest? And when I say porn, I mean this stuff is not so much NC-17 as it is X-rated. Brought to you by the Extreme Dudeness of Tommy's myspace comments.

I haven't put this up on my website yet because it might be expanding to an EVEN MORE RIDICULOUS EXTENT but you can read it over at the fest (where you should fill some prompts btw!):

Drive-By Devotion
Adam/Tommy, adult, explicit <-- REALLY REALLY I MEAN IT

It seemed like a good idea after five martinis in the Wynn high-rollers bar.

(Read the story)

*I have an invite to Archive of Our Own, if anybody needs one. Most of my non-Atlantis stories are loaded over there, and I plan to get the SGA ones up soon. I'm not sure what to do about drabbles and ficlets, though. I have a bunch, and the thought of creating header information for all of them individually is daunting. Any suggestions on how to handle this dilemma?

*Winnie has a new habit that I’m trying to curtail: chomping on my laptop power cord and killing my computer as a result. I've ordered a couple of replacement cords, but the quick death makes me aware that I really do need a new laptop. Does anyone have any specific recommendations? My computer needs are mostly web, music, photo editing, a bit of video tinkering, and word processing (no gaming). Are integral DVD burners standard these days?

xposted to IJ and LJ

It's already afternoon in England, so let me post before it's too late: happy birthday to my beloved Lady of Asheru! I wish she didn't live so far away.

Every year for her birthday I write a little story, so here is this year's. It is not the most appropriate of birthday gifts, I don't think -- for one thing, it's set after a favorite character has died. Great. My dear non-LJ friend Linda has given me a new rule: no deaths when writing stories for gifts. I will try to keep that in mind in the future.

But this year, this is what it is.

Title: Survived Their Fall
Fandom: SG1 and SGA
Pairing: Daniel Jackson/Jack O'Neill; Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2,525
Summary: Daniel spent a lot of time not looking at what he was packing because every object and every book reminded him of Jack and their years together.

A/N: For the Lady of Asheru on the occasion of her birthday.

Warning: Major character death.

I got another email address, mirabile1dictu@gmail.com (note the "1" in the middle of Mirabile Dictu; that's because someone else has mirabile.dictu and mirabiledictu. Goddammit), so I could have a Google Wave account. Now, what does one do with a Google Wave account? Thanks to Winkingstar, I know a tiny bit more than I did; she linked to this two minute video explanation. Wave as a "hosted conversation" -- see, that makes sense to me.

I currently have 86 g-wave invitations, so if you want one, please email me: mirabile1dictu@gmail.com.

Wheee!

I rewatched my source material today and used it to add a few details here and there to my story. I've got 9028 words and expect to finish the first draft this weekend. I'm lucky I was able to use a story idea I already had and work it together with the request.

I know, I have this freakish love/hate relationship with deadlines. They make me crazy, but they make me write steadily, every day, and they also give me this great whooop of relief when I know I've succeeded ahead of time.

And I will get right back to work of GT&T once I've finished with the Yuletide story and get the next part out before New Year's. I swear. I can write on one thing and revise on another, I've discovered.

Andy Rooney voice:

You know what annoys me?

A story with no email for feedback, just a journal to comment in.

I read a story I really very much liked, but I also wanted to discuss the ways it didn't work for me, and so I thought: I'll send the feedback in an email. Only there was no email addy. So I tried the writer's livejournal profile. No email. Tried her story site and the stories there. No email. A journalfen link for replying, but see, if I wanted this feedback public I'd have already left it at the feedback post.

And now I'm annoyed and not in the mood to feedback at all in any form.

Too bad, because there was a lot about the story I wanted to praise.

Today I am grateful for family - by birth, by marriage, and by choice - that I not only love, but also like. I am grateful for my health and the health of my loved ones. I am grateful for my privilege - not as a social construct but as my personal, lived reality - and for my medication, which allows me to truly enjoy what I have. I am grateful for my partner, who challenges and supports me in a million ways. I am grateful for my son, who amazes me daily with his huge heart, iron will, and enormous vocabulary. And for our neighbors, who have created a community of parents and friends and welcomed my family in with open arms.

I am grateful for friends who love me enough to forgive me when I need it, call me out when I need to be called out, and who make the extra effort to be part of my life. I am grateful for my job, where I am treated like a valuable co-worker and a worthwhile human being, and for my fannish community, which gives me so much joy and inspires me to do so many things.

I am grateful, particularly in these trying times, for enough food to eat and clean water to drink. I am grateful for the Obama administration, who are daily inching this country closer to what it can and should become. I am grateful for all the people who give their time and energy and money to improve the world. I am grateful for my civil liberties, my reproductive freedom, and my health and dental insurance.

I am grateful for no-knead bread, domestic appliances, and central heating. I am grateful for the internet, and for the various technological gadgetry that enriches my life. I'm grateful for books, for music, for fanfiction, and for big-budget movies in which lots of stuff blows up. I'm grateful for sleep, and caffeinated beverages, and butter, and salt.

There is a gathering of friends and family in the barn. More friends are on the road, on their way to see us. The air is clear and crisp, and the house is full of the smell of baking bread and the warmth of a cozy fire. May you all be so blessed.

Right now I just want to say that I am thankful for silver linings. It helps me to remain grateful for things when, for example, my chronic stress insomnia means that I have now started and am 15% done with my yuletide story. And I have a vague structure! Being awake from 3-5:30 in the morning may suck (and oh, how it sucks), but it's not always unmitigated.
